DANIEL ARSHAM

Sharing a mutual curiosity for the ocean, technical craftsmanship and experimentation, Haydenshapes and Daniel Arsham collaborate to create limited-edition surfboards that blend art and function.

The release highlight was the functional ‘Eroded Surfboard’, featuring quartz and selenite detailing, developed in Haydenshapes’ custom facility in Sydney, Australia. This groundbreaking design launched in an edition of 500 pieces, selling out online within 7 minutes.

Made using traditional surfboard foam, resin and fiberglass, it was the untraditional and experimental construction methods that made it so distinctive. The brief: incorporate Arsham’s fictional archaeological erosions in 3D physical form, while replicating the feel and function of a traditional surfboard. The finished result retained the weight and shape of a typical shortboard, featuring hollow eroded sections scattered internally throughout the board beneath a clear polished fiberglass shell.

Prior to launch, finished prototypes were ridden and tested by eight-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore and longtime Haydenshapes muse and team rider Craig Anderson.

The collaboration also included the solid clear resin surfboard sculpture, ‘Crystal Surfboard’. Weighing around 90 pounds and produced using proprietary single-pour large-format casting methods, the ‘Crystal Surfboard’ was the most scarce release in the collaboration, with only 30 editions produced.

Adding wearability to the offering, Chris Stamp of cult LA fashion label Stampd partnered with Daniel Arsham and Hayden Cox to create a collaborative nine-piece softgoods capsule. Balancing leisure and versatility, the range was designed for all genders and featured high-quality construction, technical embroidery and tonal finishes that brought Arsham’s handwritten erosion sketches to life through a monochrome palette shared by Haydenshapes and Stampd.

Exclusive ‘Wave Relic’ pop-up retail experiences featuring the full collection took place in Bondi, Sydney, at the Stampd flagship on La Brea in Los Angeles, and in-store at I.T Hysan in Hong Kong.

The ‘Eroded Surfboard’ remains the highest and fastest-selling limited-edition surfboard release in surfing history, and a defining Haydenshapes brand moment.
